Demonstration of Constructed Wetlands in Bulgaria- a project for improvement of the sanitation conditions of St. Panteleimon Home for Children and Juveniles with Mental Retardation, village of Vidrare, Pravets municipality.

WECF started in February 2009 a project on capacity building on low cost and small scale wastewater treatment in Bulgaria. Particularly the rural areas in Eastern Europe face severe environmental problems such as groundwater contamination due to untreated sewage discharge. An efficient and cheap wastewater treatment system are constructed wetlands which are operated meanwhile since 20 years in Germany, Austria, Italy, Greece and other countries. The project comprises the construction of a constructed wetland for 100 people in the village of Vidrare, in Pravets municipality in Bulgaria, as demonstration plant and a capacity building program for professionals and schools. During the construction, a training for professionals will take place. A technical information leaflet for constructed wetlands in Bulgaria will be developed and a national professional conference in Sofia will take place at the end of the project.
The project is funded by DBU, Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt. It is co-funded by the ministry of foreign affairs of the Netherlands and will be implemented by WECF.
Partners within the project are:

- EcoWorld 2007, Bulgarian environmental NGO
- TUHH, Hamburg University of Technology, Institute of Wastewater Management and Water Protection
The kick-off meeting took place on the 5th of February 2009 in Vidrare. Main frame conditions for the planning and construction were fixed, such as the exact location of the plant, co-funding by the municipality Pravetz and coming activities. As outcome the memorandum of understanding was signed by Krasimir Zhivkov- Mayor of Pravets, EcoWorld and WECF.

Demonstration einer dezentralen Pflanzenkläranlage in Bulgarien am Beispiel des Kinderheims St.Panteleimon in Vidrare, Pravetz mit wasser-/abwassertechnischen Schulungen für das Personal

WECF hat im Februar 2009 ein Projekt zu Demonstration von Pflanzenkläranlagen und Weiterbildung in Bulgarien gestartet. Besonders die ländlichen Gegenden in Osteuropa sind mit erheblichen Umweltproblemen aufgrund von mangelnden Abwasserkanalnetzen bzw. Kläranlagen konfrontiert.
In den ländlichen Regionen Bulgariens sind Wissen und Erfahrungen über naturnahe Abwasserreinigung wie z.B. Pflanzenkläranlagen, dezentrale Systeme, Regenwassermanagement und deren positive ökonomische und ökologische Aspekte oft nicht bekannt und/oder von Planern und Genehmigungsbehörden als nicht anforderungsgemäß akzeptiert. Neben Abwasserteichsystemen sind Pflanzenkläranlagen, bestehend aus einer Vorklärung und einem bepflanztem Bodenfilter, jedoch sehr effiziente, naturnahe Abwasserreinigungssysteme, die in dezentralen Konzepten für den ländlichen Raum in Bulgarien eine angepasste Technologie darstellen.
Im Rahmen des Projektes sind folgende Maßnahmen geplant:
Planung, Bau und Inbetriebnahme einer dezentralen Pflanzenkläranlage (100 PE) für das Kinderheim St. Panteleimon in Vidrare, Pravetz, als Demonstrationsanlage inklusive Training während der Realisierung
Nationale Weiterbildungsoffensive „Pflanzenkläranlagen“ im besonderen:
Entwicklung eines Typenprojektblattes zu Planung, Bau und Betrieb von Pflanzenkläranlagen und Organisation einer nationalen Fachkonferenz „Pflanzenkläranlagen“ für Planer, Entscheidungsträger und Genehmigungsbehörden
Aufklärung und Bewusstseinsbildungsmaßnahmen zu allgemeiner Hygiene, Wasserschutz, naturnahen Abwasserreinigungsverfahren an lokalen Schulen
Das Projekt wird gefördert von der DBU, Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt und co-finanziert vom niederländischen Auswärtigen Amt. Die Co-Finanzierung und Implementierung erfolgt durch WECF e.V. gemeinsam mit der Gemeinde Pravetz.

- TUHH, Technische Universität Hamburg-Harburg, Institut für Abwasserwirtschaft und Gewässerschutz
Das erste Projekt-Treffen vor Ort fand am 5. Februar 2009 in Vidrare und Pravetz statt. Wesentliche Randbedingungen und weitere Vorgehensweise wurden gemeinam mit dem Bürgermeister der Gemeinde Pravetz, Herrn Krasimir Zhikov, und WECF in einem Memorandum of Understanding festgelegt.
