The constructed wetland, a sustainable wastewater system will treat the wastewater of a centre for disabled children with mental disorders (80 PE) in Vidrare, Pravets Municipality. A seminar related to the construction of the first constructed wetland in Bulgaria was held on the 19th of November 2010.

The constructed wetland is a sustainable alternative to conventional technical wastewater systems, it has the same or even better performance, is climate-friendly, needs less energy, is easier to operate and maintain and is much more attractive in the landscape.

The event was organized by WECF, Ecoword 2007, Pravets Municipality, and with the kind support of the State Administration Sofia Region. About 25 participants from different sectors (engineers, representatives from NGOs, institutions, municipalities, local citizens and other people who were interested in the construction) followed the training. Also the Director of Sofia Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Waters, the Director of the Water and Sewage Utility, the Mayor of Pravets and representatives of the State Administration Sofia Region were participating.

All the representatives were given a detailed explanation about the principles, operation, maintenance and monitoring of the constructed wetland.
Lecturer was the German expert for sustainable wastewater systems eng. Andrea Albold who together with a Bulgarian engineering company (Ekoproekt) prepared the design of the project.

The seminar consisted of two parts, one practical part on the construction site and a theoretical part indoor (in the club of the retired people in Vidrare). A lot of questions among the participants were raised during the presentation in the second part and the discussions about sustainable wastewater options in practice and the challenges were very interesting and interactive.

Theoretical part of the lecture
The construction of the constructed wetland is realized by the Bulgarian InterStroy Group and will be finished as soon as possible as the weather allows and its operation will start at once. The organization of another seminar for professionals, the development of a technical advisory leaflet and the organization of a national conference are further activities in this project and will be carried out in spring 2011.

On the 2nd of December 2010, the progress of the constructed wetland was presented by EcoWorld at the Assembly of the Association of the Ecologists of Bulgarian Municipalities.

The project is funded by the German public foundation DBU.
