Constructed wetland in Weizenfeld near Nurnberg

April 2009 - On the 25 and 26 of March 2009 a Bulgarian delegation from Pravet visited Bavaria for a two-days study trip with the title “ Buliding of a Constructed Wetland in handicapped centre in Vidrare, Pravets Municipality“

Among the representatives from  Pravets Municipality were:

  • the Mayor -Krasimir Zhivkov
  • the Head of Environment-Irena Petkova
  • the Secretary of the Municipality Maya Tsanova
  • the Director of the centre for abandoned children  Evgeny Dimitrov and
  • the mayor of Vidrare –Bojidar Marinov.

The aim of the visit in Bavaria was to see a constructed wetland in operation. WECF took the Bulgarian officials to Bruck, near Glonn, and to Weizenfeld, near Nurnberg.

The participants were given a guided tour in the Wetlands and were informed about the operation and maintenance of the facilities.

The project aims at constructing a facility for treating of the waste water in the Village of Vidrare, in the yard of a medical centre for abandoned children with mental disorders (100 children + 30 people staff). The centre’s waste waters (coming from the actual flush toilets and hand wash facilities) after pre-sedimentation, flow into a dry gully and cause environmental pollution in the village.

WECF and EcoWorld applied for German funding to build a constructed Wetland. The project has been approved for funding by DBU (Deutsche Bundesstiftung fuer Umwelt ) and  started in February 2009.  An agreement was signed between WECF and Pravets Municipality for joint cooperation.

 Planned activities for the project are:

  • technical documentation in Bulgarian for constructed Wetland technology;
  • on-site trainings for engineers during the construction phase;
  • a high level conference at the end of the project with national and international experts.

This project will be implemented as a demonstration facility for treatment of the wastewaters. Moreover it could serve as an example for replication for other municipalities with less than 2000 inhabitants in rural Bulgaria.

Nevertheless, despite these operational funds for the country thanks to the entry in the EU, for these small municipalities it remains difficult to solve the problems related to waste water treatment.
