Domestic biogas technology as a solution to tackle energy poverty and lack of sanitation

A thesis by Eric Buysman from Wageningen University in cooperation with WECF

23.07.2009 |Claudia Wendland

Domestic biogas technology is a solution to tackle energy poverty, lack of sanitation and drudgery of firewood collection. However, biogas production in the countries where WECF and its partners operate, has limited financial feasibility resulting from  low ambient (winter) temperatures. To allow the rural poor in these countries to benefit from biogas technology, innovative cost-effectve solutions are required to overcome the cold.

This master thesis focuses on the combination of technical solutions (solar energy)and financial solutions (i.e. carbon finance), furthermore, it sketches an elaborative framework on how biogas, or more correctly anearobic digestion, benefits the rural poor, the local and national economy and even the global environment.
