WECF Composting Workshop, Misaktsieli, Georgia

Within the framework of the Empowerment and Local Action program WECF organized from 13 to 16 October 2008 a composting workshop in Misaktsieli, Georgia. The objectives of the workshop were:
1. To develop a brochure (in Russian) on composting practice adapted to the local conditions. One chapter of the brochure is dedicated to the direct use of urine in agriculture
2. To develop a poster on composting
3. To develop a flyer to be used by farmers
4. To develop a manual for conducting training at farmer level on the preparation and use of compost and urine, and
5. To collect reference material for further in-depth reading.
In total 13 persons representing 10 organizations from 4 countries in Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia participated in the workshop.
All participants had practical experience in the preparation of compost. Several participants also have experience as farmers.
The program and the list of participants of the workshop are attached. The program of the workshop included both plenary sessions and group work (photo’s 2124, 2133).
The workshop started with a carousel: in small groups of 2-3 persons the participants dicussed the following questions (photo’s 21118, 2119, 2126):
- What are the main target groups of your intervention on compost making?
What information/materials would you need to make farmers start composting?
Why are farmers not composting?
How to overcome these constraints?
How can we motivate farmers to start composting?
What can you compost?
All participants gave a short presentation on the activities of their organization and their experiences with the preparation of compost (photo 2132). After deciding in a plenary session on the chapters to be included in the brochure, the participants worked in small groups on the various chapters (photo’s 2134, 2136, 2137). In another plenary session the participants decided on the final text. The brochure will be published in Russian.
Included in the program was an excursion to a Georgian farmer participating in the project of WECF partner SEMA. All crops on this farm are grown organically. The farmer showed his fields, the compost heap and his biogas-installation. (photo’s 2166, 2167, 2173, 2174).
The draft brochure prepared during the workshop will be finalized and published in Russian. The training manual, poster and flyer will also come available to all WECF partners in the ELA-program. The brochure will cover the following topics:
- Why should we compost?
Fertilizing: the role of organic matter and compost
The composting process
The practice of composting
Methods to make compost
Composting specific materials
The use and application of compost - Direct application of urine
