Anna Samwel (WECF) presenting alternative technologies in the EECCA countries

From  April 17-19, a study visit and training ‘Introduction to alternative technologies for sustainable rural development took place in Misaktsieli, Georgia. The training was organized and facilitated by Women in Europe for a Common Future (WECF) and its partners organizations Rural Communities Development Agency (RCDA) from Georgia and EKOT EKOT ( Ekoloji Tarazliq QHT) from Azerbaijan.

The visit was organized in the frame of the project “Community approaches to a better environment for all and poverty reduction in out of reach communities of rural Azerbaijan” and its aim was to introduce to the Azeri participants alternative sustainalble technologies which can be easily implemented in rural areas.

11 participants  -  community members, local coordinators and EKOT staff  took part   in the training. The first day a theoretical part and an excursion within the center was organized, all exposed technologies (different types of solar warm water collectors, different ecosan toilets, biogas, different types of solar fruit dryers, solar greenhouse, drinking water destilator, sand filter, solar room heater and a bricketing machine) were inspected and discussed.
The topic of the second day was water and sanitation. Ecosan was explained discussed, together with  Georgian experts in the topics of  water, biogas and composting. Main attention was given to the water protection strategies, on European as wel as on regional and local level. At the end of the day an excursion to a demonstration farm supported by WECF partner SEMA was organized.

During the  third day alternative energy technologies were discussed in more details. A solar fruit dryer and a bricketing machine were built in practice by the participants themselves with the help of RCDA engineers. The participants were extremely enthusiastic, and in the evenings they voluntarily gathered again in the seminar room in order to demand more information on the seminar topics. Most of the proposed technologies suited their needs, and priorities were identified. The final evaluation of the study visit showed that the participants were very satisfied, and there is a need for practical follow up trainings during which the technologies will be built in reality in Azerbaijan. This is the next phase of the project.
