Start-up Meeting in Minsk of the project “Developing multi-stakeholder co-operation in the areas of water, waste and energy efficiency in Belarus”, May 21 – 28, 2007

Together with WECF’s partner Ecoproject the team conducted several meetings, study visits and a workshop. Kitty Bentvelsen, a consultant to WECF, trained staff of Ecoproject and some other key participants in the project on how to conduct a base-line study. The project team held meetings to evaluate the project up to now and to plan the activities for the next six months. These activities will include a seminar in June to present the project to local NGOs and two training conferences in autumn on the issues of water and sanitation and on waste (see picture below).

The team also held a focus meeting with representatives of the main Belarusian environmental NGOs on the project’s main topics water, waste and energy. This meeting provided an ideal platform to announce the project of WECF and Ecoproject and to exchange information on the environmental situation in Belarus including on on-going projects, know-how and ideas. Furthermore the team visited two dacha co-operatives, two schools (including an ecological gymnasium) as well as the town Smilovichy around 40 km from Minsk. In Smilovichy the team also had the opportunity to attend an “Open Space” event held at the local school identifying the main problems in the town and planning for solutions.

Overall, the team established very good working relations with its partner and several other stakeholders and was able to learn more about the concrete situation in relation to the issues of water, waste and energy.
