European Parliament and Council agree on second reading compromise for chemicals legislation

Following intense closed-door negotiations over the past few weeks, the European Parliament and the European Council agreed on a second reading compromise last night in Brussels

WECF and our partners in the REACH coalition commented on the deal, saying it was "a deal too far".

Under the deal, chemicals that cause cancer, miscarriages, birth defects, change DNA and disrupt the human hormone system will not have to be substituted EVEN if safer alternatives are available.

"In making such a wrong decision, the European Parliament and the Council acted irresponsibly" according to Daniela Rosche, WECF REACH expert. Because of this decision, women's health and that of future generations will not be protected.
