WECF is the lead author for the chapter "Sanitation - a challenge for Europe", published in the European regional report for the World Water Forum-4.
The chapter on Sanitation shows that access to appropriate and affordable sanitation is in particularly a challenge for Eastern European, Caucasus and Central Asian countries. But also in the European Union only 50% of large cities treat their waste-water sufficiently. Sanitation should be much more a priority for politicians and funding agencies.
In particular decentralized waste-water treatment and ecological sanitation can provide an interesting, less costly solution for rural and semi-urban areas.
Good practices from WECF's members MAMA-86 Ukraine and GeoSan Romania are publishes as case studies in the report.
The catalyst role of women - and importance of involving women's organisation in multi-stakeholder processes on sanitation - is highlighted.
WECF cooperated in writing the chapter on sanitation with the French Water Agency "Agende Eaux Seine Normandie", with the University of Technology Hamburg, with WASTE Netherlands, with PS-Eau France and with EcoSanRes, Sweden.
WECF and Women for Water (WfWfW) are preparing together for the participation of women's organistions in the World Water Forum in Mexico, which will take place from 16 - 22 of March, 2006. See also the WECF calendar
