Am Montag (20.06.2011) haben sich 14 deutsche Hilfsorganisationen in der Bundeszentrale von Malteser International in Köln getroffen, um ein neues Netzwerk für Wasser-, Sanitärversorgung und Hygiene (WASH) zu gründen. Mehr Zusammenarbeit, Abstimmung und Erfahrungsaustausch der Organisationen und ihrer Experten untereinander, sollen den deutschen Beitrag zur Lösung eines der größten Probleme des 21. Jahrhunderts wirkungsvoller machen.
Laut aktuellen Zahlen der WHO und UNICEF leben ca. 900 Millionen Menschen weltweit ohne Zugang zu sauberem Wasser und 2,6 Milliarden ohne sanitäre Grundversorgung.
Die Mitglieder des WASH-Netzwerks teilen die gemeinsame Vision, dass alle Menschen Zugang zu einer nachhaltigen und sicheren Wasser- und Sanitärversorgung haben und eigenverantwortlich grundlegende Prinzipien der Hygiene praktizieren. Würde diese Vision Wirklichkeit, könnten täglich ca. 5.000 Kinder unter fünf Jahren gerettet werden, die derzeit an den Folgen mangelhafter Hygiene sterben.
