Article by WECF in Dutch Agrarian newspaper at the start of the World Food Summit in Rome

12.11.2009 | Sabine Brueckmann and Chantal van den Bossche, Agrarisch Dagblad

This year about 1 Billion people are facing food shortages, unaffordable food prices and in many cases, hunger. Global grain reserves are declining, and grain prices are skyrocketing. There are many underlying factors for the ongoing food-crisis, from bad harvests due to climate change, unjust distribution of food, diversion of grain to fuel cars, or the global increase in meat consumption.

On the occasion of the next World Summit on Food Security in Rome, November 2009, WECF wants to point out again, that already in 2008 the International Assessment of Agricultural Knowledge, Science and Technology for Development (IAASTD) highlighted in its World Agriculture Report” several preconditions “to deal with these challenges. For WECF the most important one are:

  • Hunger & poverty can only be overcome locally
  • Food- (and feed) – sovereignty has to be assured by and to the society
  • Multi-functionality of agriculture has to be saved or/and improved
  • Small-scale rural diversity instead of monocultures
  • An agro-ecologic „revolution“ has to be started
  • Public research with instead of for rural people, using their knowledge

and last but not least:

  • Women make the difference
