The Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialist & Democrats call for ultimate eradication of asbestos contamination in European Parliament
The European Parliament adopted a resolution which sets a deadline for the final eradication of asbestos contamination until 2028.
21.03.2013 |S&D
A fast majority voted for it, effectively setting a deadline to eradicate asbestos contamination by 2028. Despite an EU-wide ban on asbestos adopted in 1999, still many buildings are contaminated with asbestos. Therefore, the strategy will also contain measures to screen older buildings for asbestos contamination. Even the EU Parliament building i Strasbourg is contaminated with asbestos.
With the European Parliament adopting a stringent resolution with such a vast majority, the European Commission has to act as well now. S&D emphasized that all types of asbestos are dangerous and that all workers removing it must be adequately trained.
