The French Green MEP Nicole Kiil-Nielsen presented a report on the link between the fight against climate change and discrimination against women. The motion for a European Parliament resolution was introduced in a plenary session on April, 20 by the Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality.

The motivation behind this idea and as it is put forward in the report “[s]ince gender-based discrimination is found everywhere in our societies, we believe it essential that it be taken into consideration in climate policies in order to avoid worsening the situation and, above all, in order to tap into a whole reservoir of ideas, actions and leverage mechanisms with which to tackle the urgency of the fight against climate change”. (p.12)

The rapporteur also points out that the inclusion of gender issues would in its turn provide an opportunity towards a more effective, stronger and fairer fight against climate change. Further, the report also stresses the need for a change of mind and attitude and advocates for the broader inclusion of “groups which defend women's rights in negotiation processes and funding mechanisms, improving women's education and consulting them more, and encouraging projects which liberate and empower women within their own communities, both in developing countries and in the EU”. (p. 13)
