Democratization of the Dniester River Basin
16 Demonstration community projects are implemented in this Matra project

In the frame of this project, 16 demonstration projects on sustainable river basin management are implemented by the communities. Facilitated by the project partners, the communities explored the local problems related to the sustainable river basin management and possible solutions in a multi stakeholder process. Trainings for the communities on relevant topics such as Solid Waste management including recycling and composting, flood prevention, Water Safety Plans, Sustainable Sanitation and nature oriented fish farming were organized by WECF and partners. Based on the acquired knowledge and on local needs, 16 demonstration projects were developed by the communities along the tributaries Cubolta, Bucovati, Kuchurgan and Zolotaja Lipa in Moldova, Transnistria and Ukraine, facilitated by local partner NGOs. The demonstration projects address locally identified and prioritized environmental problems and they demonstrate low cost solutions for sustainable river basin management. For example, some of the communities decided to implement solutions for solid waste management, cleaning up the river banks, re-forestation, developing a legalized waste dump or promoting separation of waste. In Transdnistria, a part of a water supply system was constructed, providing the citizen with safe drinking water. Follow up projects on sustainable sanitation are being developed for several communities.
The process of developing and implementing of the demonstration projects led to one of the most important outcomes of the project, namely the development of partnerships between local communities, local authorities and civil society stakeholders to work together for an environmentally and socially sustainable river basin management for the first time.
Water Day and Dniester Day celebrations, a river festival as well as summer camps were organized NGOs with communities and other stakeholders.
WECF project coordinator Sabine Brueckmann and field officer/project assistant Anna Samwel visited the partners and communities twice in 2009. In spring they conducted trainings and consultations for the local NGOs and communities on the topics of their interest. In autumn the purpose of the visit was monitoring on the implementation of demonstration projects and consultations for the communities.
In 2010 new demonstration projects will be developed in 4 communities and the ongoing projects will be finalized. Follow up projects will be developed. The yearly Dniester conference will take place in Transdniestria.
