WECF organises a high-level Lunch event on 11th May from 1 – 3 PM at the United Nations, New York, in the framework of the 18th Session of the Commission for Sustainable Development which addresses the issues of mining and waste in its current 2 year cycle.

In cooperation with representatives of indigenous communities from uranium mining regions from around the world, WECF and Heinrich Boell Foundation are organizing a special event from 1-3 PM on Tuesday 11th of May, with their testimonies. Representatives of the Navajo in Colorado, Tuareg from Niger and other indigenous communities from Mali, South-Africa, India and Kazakhstan. One of the speakers in the panel is  Almoustapha Alhacen.  The influential German magazine Der Spiegel recently featured a three-part series on the impact of uranium mining upon Mr. Alhacen’s family and the Tuareg communities in Niger.

Please note that places are limited and the pre-registration is encouraged at un-lunch-event@wecf.eu

The movie Avatar, has been the inspiration for this special high-level Lunch event. James Cameron, director of the movie AVATAR has been invited to receive an award during the lunch event from the indigenous peoples, for raising awareness about mining of “energy stones” such as uranium and unobtanium.
