Live from Poznan: WECF participating in event on Gender Justice and Climate Change Policy

On Monday December 1st 2008 WECF as part of Gender CC (Women for Climate Justice) organized a side event regarding gender aspects in climate change

The well visited event has been moderated by Minu Hemmati from Gender CC. Gotelind Alber gave a short overview about the relevance of bringing in the gender subject into the climate discussion. Meike Spitzner pointed out the gender aspect in transport systems. Sharmind Neelormi from the Jahangirnagar University spoke about the necessity to consider women’s rights in terms of adaptation very well and the challenge of WECF was to bring in the gender aspect in nuclear energy.

Claire Greensfelder, who was speaking on behalf of WECF made it very clear that women are closely connected to nuclear energy concerning the history of the technique as well as health issues. It has been women who found out first about the nuclear power and it has been women who first spoke out loud against this highly dangerous and inefficient technique. Claire Greensfelder made clear that using nuclear power is a highly unethical technique. In the process of mining mostly indigenous people are affected because they lose their land and suffer from health problems like cancer or tuberculosis. Running a nuclear system is highly dangerous and affects people living around the power plants. Further, the waste problem still remains unsolved. It is women and children who suffer most from the problematic side effects as they are much more sensitive to the effects of radiation. During the event, the audience had the possibility to sign a petition to keep nuclear out of the Clean Development Meganism (CDM). De approximately 100 attendees, both NGOs and Delegates, were enthusiastic to sign. The petition against nuclear shall be presented in the second week of the negotiations in Poznan.
