Problems of water supply in rural mountain regions Armenia

A report on WECF's impression of the water project and home made toilets in the villages Urud and Sverdlov, Armenia

28.04.2008 |Margriet Samwel

During Soviet time the village Sverdlov, 1200 citizens, approx. 15 km from Stepanavan (location of EcoLoreClub), was central supplied with water from the mountains.  Villagers have taps in the yard; some have taps in the house. There is no sewage system, villagers have pit-latrines and some of them have a well with acc. the information has yellow turbid water.

The water for the central supply was collected in the mountains, in several reservoirs and flowed by natural gravity to the village. In the village is a central big reservoir of 200 cubic meters to collect all the water, which is supplied to the villagers.  Now the pipes and the water reservoirs are leaching and there is just enough water to supply two public standpipes, people have partly to go far for getting their water. The mayor has organized and is maintaining those two pipes. It is visible, that the pipes have been repaired a lot of times.
