International Symposium in Garla Mare

Roma children of Garla Mare show their traditional dances
The NGO FVC (Femii pentru un Viitor Curat - women for a clean future) of Garla Mare organized with the support of WECF an international symposium “our environment”, which took place at 21 April 2007 in the cultural centre of Garla Mare.
All the teachers of the primary schools and the school inspectorate of the Mehedinti County were invited to participate. For the 350 teachers, who showed their interest, information materials on composting and burning of waste on household level were prepared and handed out. Certificates of participation were prepared and signed by the school inspectorate, school director of Garla mare, President of FVC and the representant of WECF.
The event was festive campaigned by international cultural groups.
Teachers from Bulgaria, Serbia and Czech republic were invited to share their experiences on solid waste management in their villages or in their schools. From Garla Mare Angela Boiangiu (leader of FVC and teacher) presented the experiences of the ecosan toilets in her school. Margriet Samwel of WECF explained the health risks of indoor and outdoor burning of waste. Special attention was paid on the health risks of burning plastic waste.
After the presentation a very attractive cultural program was organised for the audience.
Children of the school in Garla Mare song and showed traditional Romanian and Rroma dances but also modern dances. Also the Czech, Bulgarian, and Serbian presented many traditional songs and dances in their own specific cultural costumes.
The cultural program was a very successful completion of the well-organised symposium.
