Up-date on project “Sustainable Rural Development in Ukraine”

Two more ecosan (dry-urine diverting) toilets have been constructed in Vorokhta for private households

02.10.2006 |Solomiya Babyak

In the framework of MATRA project “Sustainable Rural Development in Ukraine” in summer 2006 Mama-86-Yaremche constructed 2 more ecosan (dry-urine diverting) toilets for private households in Vorokhta. The construction of another one is ongoing. This will be the fifth ecosan toilet for the village. All the prospective owners of ecosan toilets contributed with materials and free labour.

This time private ecosan toilets have been constructed without presence of our international waste water expert Stefan Deegener, as the representative of Mama-86-Yaremche, Roman, was leading the construction and produced cement bowls for the ecosan toilets. Roman has already a significant experience in the construction of the dry-urine diverting toilets as he participated in the construction of the first two ecosan toilets in Vorokhta in autumn 2005. He also participated in the training-seminar on dry-urine diverting toilets construction in Stepanovka in May 2006, which was held in the framework of “Sustainable Development for All”, another project conducted by Mama-86 and WECF in Ukraine.

As a result 4 ( by the end of this summer – 5) families in the small town of Vorokhta will have an access to environmentally friendly sanitation facilities. Moreover, the new owners of ecosan toilets are among other 100 inhabitants who will benefit from access to drinking water, as they will be connected to a new branch of Vorokhta central water supply system (cwss). The construction of a new cwss branch finished on July, 15 2006 and its costs were covered from MATRA project budget. This happened due to fruitful cooperation of all stakeholders involved (i.e. Mama-86, local authorities, Vorokhta public committee and WECF).

There are also good news from Bobryk village (Chernigivska oblast, Ukraine), where Mama-86-Nizhyn is finalising the construction of dry-urine diverting toilets for the local school. The works are done for over 80%. Besides the construction of inside dry-urine diverting toilets in Bobryk school, the full renovation of the washing basins, constant supply of water for washing hands and reconstruction of the drainage system take place. The teachers and the school children are unpatiently waiting for the opening ceremony of the school ecosan toilets. It will take place on September, 1, 2006 during the first day of the school year. We believe that construction of the ecosan toilets for Bobryk school will raise attention of the local and rayon authorities to the problems of this and other small and almost dying villages.
