Romanian Minister of Environment and Water Management, Sulfina Barbu was reported as saying, that the total estimated costs for investments in fields relating to the quality of drinking water and the cleaning of the urban residual waters exceed EUR 14 bn, while meeting the commitments of the European Union environmental directives in the water and wastewater sector. During the symposium, "European legislation and performing technology in water supplying and residual waters' cleaning”, the problems local and central authorities are facing in implementing modern technologies were discussed. Transition periods for the norms were put at 9-12 years, until 2018, for enforcing the provisions on the quality of the drinking water and the cleaning of the urban residual waters. Upgrading of the 224 water treatment stations for urban residual waters will comprise new facilities and the rehabilitation, modernization and extension of the existing ones. European funds are available, which will cover approx. 40 per cent of the necessary funds, with the rest to be covered from the state budget, local budgets or public-private partnerships.
