Sophie Prize 2006 Nomination

WECF has nominated MAMA-86 for the Sophie Prize 2006

21.12.2005 |Sascha Gabizon

Recently, WECF has proposed to nominate one of the full-membership partners of  WECF, MAMA-86, for the Sophie Prize 2006.

MAMA-86 was established in 1990 in Kiev by young mothers concerned about the impact of the Chernobyl accident on children's health. Every year new MAMA-86 organisations are created all over Ukraine by women who are inspired by the work done.  Now, after its fifteen years of existence, MAMA-86 has developed into a national network of 17 regional environmental organizations lead by women.
MAMA-86 receives a lot of positive attention in the Ukrainian media by using a good working method and by focusing on environmental and health themes relevant to the citizens.

Twenty years after ‘Chernobyl’, the work of MAMA-86 is still extremely necessary  (especially given a recent report of WHO where the effects of Chernobyl were downplayed under the influence of IAEA).
The fact that the number of participants, the activities and results of the projects of MAMA-86 have been steadily growing during its years of existence, proves that the concept of MAMA-86’s work is very successful.

MAMA-86 has cooperated with Women in Europe for a Common Future (WECF) in the Netherlands since 1993. MAMA-86 and WECF have implemented -and are still implementing- several projects together. An example of one of the numerous successful projects MAMA-86 has initiated and implemented is the campaign "Drinking Water in Ukraine", which is widely known, both in Ukraine and abroad, due to its efficiency at local and national levels.
