WECF presents ecosan to 30 Romanian mayors from the province of Teleorman

18.05.2005 |Margriet Samwel

WECF presented to 30 Romanian mayors of the province Teleorman “Alternatives for Sanitation Systems”.

The province Overijssel of the Netherlands invited WECF to give a presentation on alternatives for sanitation systems: Ecological Sanitation.

The Province Overijssel of the Netherlands supports the Province Teleorman, Romania, to find solution on the improvement of wastewater and drinking water systems and management. The provinces are still in the stage of inventory and investigation on the actually situation and on finding solutions and funds for future implementations in Teleorman.

Because WECF has experience on alternative human waste management in rural areas, WECF's sanitation expert Margriet Samwel was invited to Brussels to give a presentation on this issue to 30 mayors of the Province Teleorman.

The 30 mayors were invited by Province Overijssel (Integraal Waterbeheer, Eenheid Water en Bodem).

Advantages of ecological sanitation and disadvantages of conventional wastewater systems were discussed. As an example of alternative sanitation systems the dry urine diverting toilets which WECF and its project partners constructed in a school in the Romanian village Garla Mare where shown and discussed.

The mayors were very interested in the new approach of human waste management and several mayors uttered the wish to start a pilot project on dry urine diverting toilets in their community.

As a follow up WECF is invited to give again a presentation on alternatives for sanitation systems on the International Danube Day on 29 June in Turnu Magurele, Romania.
