20 years after Chernobyl - in Belarus 50.000 children will contract cancer

30%  of children in Belarus region of Gomel will contract thyroid cancer

"Thirty per cent of all the children from the area around Gomel (Belarus) who were aged between 0 and 4 at the time of the nuclear disaster will contract cancer of the thyroid during their lifetime. I endorse this WHO view. In this region alone, this is 50 000 people."

New Website Chernobyl+20

In Germany preparations for the commemorations of the 20th anniversary of the nuclear catastrophe in Chernobyl have started.

The German Environmental Ministry and the Research Institute for Environmental Policy at the Free Univerity of Berlin launched an information platform on the planned actitivites for spring 2006. The website is currently in German, but will be available in English and Russian soon, go to www.tschernobyl2006.de

 
Chernobyl 1986
On April 26. 1986 two explosions of the fourth reactor destroyed the Ukrainian nuclear energy plant 'Chernobyl'.  Till today, this is the worst disaster in the histroy of nuclear energy technology.
