Was your country given a cancer culprit award?

The countries that obstructed the listing of asbestos were given a Cancer Culprit Award during the 5th Conference of the Parties on the Rotterdam Convention

29.06.2011 | Johanna Hausmann

From June 20th – June 25th, nations gathered in Geneva, Switzerland for the Conference of the Parties of the Rotterdam Convention. There they voted on whether to list asbestos as a harmful substance that should be better labeled and regulated. The countries that obstructed the listing of asbestos were given a Cancer Culprit Award.

According to the WHO, asbestos kills 100,000 people each year – those nations that are hindering global efforts to protect those at risk of asbestos related illness, are worthy of the ‘Cancer Culprit Awards’.

CancerCulprits.org was created by the  ROCA Allicance  to support global efforts ensuring that asbestos and other harmful substances are regulated in such a way that human health is protected in all countries.

While using irony, the ‘Cancer Culprit Awards’ makes a serious statement that governments of countries that do not support the full regulation of asbestos should be ashamed of their role in the health impact of this cancer causing substance. With the approval of the group of civil society activists attending the conference as part of the Rotterdam Convention Alliance delegation, each day, a Cancer Culprit Award will be given to the countries obstructing the listing of chrysotile asbestos. A Conference Champion award may also be given to any country or countries making a strong contribution to the Convention’s effectiveness.

With the support of several advocacy organizations who participate in the Rotterdam Convention Conference, CancerCulprits.org follows the proceedings of the Conference of the Parties and based on the actions of country delegations, gives the title of ‘Cancer Culprit’ to the country or countries that take steps to prevent the listing of chrysotile asbestos in Annex III of the Rotterdam Convention.

The cancer culprit award was given to:
Canada, Brazil, Ukraine, Kazakhstan (2nd award), Kyrgyzstan, India, Vietnam, China

The Conference Champion Award was given to: India
