WECF worried about change in responsibility of developing EDC criteria
Portfolio likely to move from EU DG Environment to DG for health
26.09.2014 |
The criteria for endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) will be developed in the next term of the EU executive within the context of the Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR) and other EU legislation. This will be done by the European Commission’s directorate general for health (Sanco). However, it is expected that Sanco will get the responsibility over the portfolio of biocides, which might increase their stake in developing the new criteria. But the directorate general (DG) of Environment will still keep the responsibility for the overall strategy of EDCs.
WECF’s advocacy officer, Elisabeth Ruffinengo, says about the change that it will likely "mean moving to a socio-economic approach rather than a health and environment based approach, especially given the forthcoming impact assessment, which is foreseen for the next months. We fear that this means delays and postponing of decisions while losing some key elements that have been agreed from before [the time] when DG Environment was in charge of developing the criteria.”
