With a series of events, WECF raises awareness before, during and after the COP 22, the Climate Summit, about the impacts of climate change and the co-benefits of mitigation measures, while encouraging officials to take action regarding climate change & gender justice.
WECF will be involved in a number of high-level events and summits, debating with policy-makers and national and international actors involved in climate policy. WECF’s Executive Director Sascha Gabizon a.o. will be present in Marrakech to discuss the importance of taking action.
Along with the Women and Gender Constituency WECF organises the Gender Just Climate Solution Award Event on November 14, highlighting women's organisations' best practices, in the presence of H.E. Mrs. Amina Mohammed, Min. Environment of Nigeria, H.E. Mrs. Hakima El Haite Min. Environment of Morocco and Climate Champion, H.E. Mrs. Ségolène Royal, Min. Environment of France and President COP21. This will be followed by an Award Celebration November 15 in the presence of Dutch Minister Liliane Ploumen.
Since the Paris Agreement was struck at the global climate Summit in Paris (21st Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, COP21) last year, countries have come together at an unprecedented rate to ensure its early into force.
Political momentum to combat climate change has grown remarkably since 195 adopted the Paris Agreement last December. With the Paris Agreement in place, COP22 must ensure the way is paved for transformative action to take place in the coming years.
Action before the year 2020 is a prerequisite for reaching the long-term goals of the Paris Agreement. In Marrakech discussions on how to undertake radical action in the coming years will be a priority, and the Moroccan presidency of the Conference will seek concrete contributions from all countries.

For the general public (green zone)
There is a huge complex open for the general public, filled with sustainable interventions, divided into different topical issues. We are located in the Gender & Climate section of the venue. With 6 educational posters, we guide our visitors on the main 6 points of the Paris Agreement, and how gender is related to theses issues. With a 3D model, located in the centre of the pavilion, we illustrate how these gender just solutions fit in to all different types of societies (rural, urban, north and south).

COP – The Conference of Parties (COP) is the supreme decision-making body of the Convention. All States that are Parties to the Convention are represented at the COP, at which they review the implementation of the Convention and any other legal instruments that the COP adopts and take decisions necessary to promote the effective implementation of the Convention, including institutional and administrative arrangements. COP22 – the Marrakech event is the 22nd time the COP is convening
COP22 blue zone – the general public does not have access to this area, as it is only open for negotiating parties and observers. WECF as a co-facilitator of WGC, has access to the blue zone as an observer and can therefore attend those negotiations and ministerial meetings that at open for outside parties.
COP22 green zone – is the area open for the general public, and is the exhibition part of the COP negotiations. Here organisations get there opportunity to showcase their work and the public get to interact and network.
Intervention – is the opportunity where the civil society gets to intervene and add their input in negotiations. Interventions are not always guaranteed to be heard; but the civil society is given the opportunity to still influence our decision-makers by sending the text to the secretariat. It is up to negotiators to read the intervention, so it is not always guaranteed they are read.
Paris Agreement – The Paris Agreement is an agreement within the framework of the UNFCCC dealing with greenhouse gases emissions mitigation, adaptation and finance, and will be entered into force year 2020. Read more here: UNFCCC Paris Agreement http://unfccc.int/paris_agreement/items/9485.php
SBSTA – The SBSTA is one of two permanent subsidiary bodies to the Convention established by the COP/CMP. It supports the work of the COP and the CMP through the provision of timely information and advice on scientific and technological matters as they relate to the Convention or its Kyoto Protocol. Key areas of work for the SBSTA are the impacts, vulnerability and adaptation to climate change; emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries; promoting the development and transfer of environmentally-sound technologies; and conducting technical work to improve the guidelines for preparing and reviewing greenhouse gas emission inventories from Annex I Parties. The SBSTA carries out methodological work under the Convention and the Kyoto Protocol, and promotes collaboration in the field of research and systematic observation of the climate system. SBI – The SBI is one of two permanent subsidiary bodies to the Convention established by the COP/CMP. It supports the work of the COP and the CMP through the assessment and review of the effective implementation of the Convention and its Kyoto Protocol. The SBI also advises the COP on budgetary and administrative matters. In 2013, the SBI had the challenging task of managing the shift in focus towards the MRV issues with the launch of the international assessment and review (IAR) and international consultations and analysis (ICA) in 2014, and work on nationally appropriate mitigation actions (NAMAs). Loss and damage and adaptation finance is another area where progress was made under the SBI by reaching an agreement on a loss and damage mechanism and pledging funds in the range of US$ 100 million to the adaptation fund.
