CSW62: Women's Major Group side event on chemicals, gender equality and rural women

20.03.2018 | New York

“Strengthening gender policies for a toxics-free planet for rural women”

We would kindly like to invite you to our side event: “Strengthening gender policies for a toxics-free planet for rural women”. The event is running parallel to the sixty-second session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW62), at the United Nations Headquarters in New York (12-23 March, 2018). The CSW theme this year is: “challenges and opportunities in achieving gender equality and the empowerment of rural women and girls”. Join us on 20 March 2018 at 2:30 pm EST, at the tenth floor of the UN Church Centre for a documentary screening, presentation of case studies from the field and engaging discussions!

About event

Each year, 9 million people die from pollution; many of which die specifically from air pollution, toxic waste, pesticides and mercury. Chemical pollution and hormone-related diseases such as breast cancer are linked.  We will be screening a short excerpt from our documentary “What has gender got to do with chemicals?” The film shows how women and men in rural areas of Nigeria and Senegal are exposed to highly hazardous chemicals and waste, such as highly hazardous chemicals, industrial oils and electronic and plastic waste (e-waste). The film also shows good practices by rural women (and men) on how to reduce exposure whilst improving gender equality. E.g.  a community-waste-collection scheme and a women’s organic farming group that makes their own ‘natural-pesticides’ from Neem trees while increasing women’s decision-making at decisions on government policies. The documentary film will be followed by case studies from Nigeria and Indonesia, before we open up the floor for dialogue.
