Gender, land and sustainable development

05.06.2014 | International Conference in Berne, Switzerland

WECF Director Sascha Gabizon will be speaking at "Gender, land and sustainable development" an International Conference, taking place the 5th of June 2014 at

The University of Berne
Uni S, Schanzeneckstrasse 1
Berne

Pressure on land is growing. In many rural societies, land is the basis of food security, water, wellbeing and sustainable livelihoods. Therefore, land is a key issue for poverty reduction and sustainable development. However, access to, and ownership of land is closely linked to gender.

Women’s access is often severely restricted, with only a fifth of all landholders worldwide being a woman. Efforts to achieve gender equality in land issues through development cooperation have only had a modest impact so far.
Therefore, an active exchange among different stakeholders, researchers, policy makers and practitioners has become more important than ever.

What is the link between gender, land and sustainable development?
Why is it so important to address gender and land issues in development cooperation activities in the context of food security, climate change, water and resource conflicts?
How are these issues linked to the current debates in the context of the post-2015 agenda for sustainable development? These questions will be highlighted in two keynote speeches and four different workshops.

This international conference is organised by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and the Interdisciplinary Centre for Gender Studies of the University of Berne (ICFG).
