WECF shared official submission to European Commission consultation on hormone disrupting chemicals (EDCs)
WECF and its EDC-Free campaign partners have publicly shared their official submissions to the EU Commission’s consultation on the criteria to identify hormone disrupting chemicals (known as EDCs).

Due to intensive industry lobbying, the European Commission has delayed action on hormone disrupting chemicals, which is needed to protect health.
Therefore a public consultation in seven languages has been launched to gather feedback on public concerns.
Through the campaign, WECF and EDC-free partners called on individuals to submit their answers to the consultation, via an easy to use online platform set up by the EDC-Free Secretariat. Thanks to this platform entitled ‘Say NO to hormone disrupting chemicals’, the EDC-Free coalition gathered a fantastic 20,440 submissions to the consultation.
Scientific evidence links exposure to EDCs to spiralling rates of hormone-related cancers such as breast or testicular cancer, fertility problems, diabetes and obesity as well as learning and behavioural problems in children. Exposure also disrupts the hormonal systems of wildlife. The World Health Organization (WHO) has called hormone disrupting chemicals a ‘global threat’.
By responding to the public consultation, NGOs and public have sent a strong signal to the European Commission that there are serious concerns and public support for action to protect us, the environment and our children in Europe and beyond.

The campaign
The EDC-Free Europe coalition represents hundreds of groups throughout Europe, including trade unions, consumers, public health and healthcare professionals, and advocates for cancer prevention, environmentalists and women’s groups. Website: www.edc-free-europe.org

The campaign aims to achieve a ban on hormone disrupting chemicals in the European Union, more independent information on exposure to hormone disrupting chemicals for people and governments, and greater public engagement to ensure that hormone disrupting chemicals are properly identified and phased out.
