France announces EDC strategy

WECF welcomes measures but calls for further action

21.05.2014 |

Earlier this month French sustainable development minister Ségolène Royal announced a new national strategy on endocrine disruptors (EDCs). WECF France, Réseau Environnement Santé (RES) and Générations Futures have played a crucial role in the development of this approach.

The main objective of the French EDC strategy is to reduce the exposure to endocrine disruptors of individuals and the environment. According to this approach, France will propose to restrict the use of bisphenol A (BPA) in thermal paper (mainly used for receipts), push for quick replacement of BPA in toys and introduce measures in order to monitor the use of phthalates in toys.

Although these measures are an important step in the right direction, WECF France is not entirely satisfied with the new approach. WECF was surprised to hear that the French strategy does not ban the use of EDCs in children’s toys- even though the organization successfully collected 30.000 signatures for this cause with an online petition (Stop PE).
