WECF Conference 'Time to act': Towards an EU policy to protect children from EDCs

Invitation to the Launch of the Life+ Project

Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are found in our daily lives. Phthalates are used in flooring, toys and furniture. Flame retardants are used in curtains and mattresses and Bisphenol-A (BPA) is used in plastics, papers and can linings, as well as in some cosmetics.

Many pesticides and biocides contain EDCs and exposure can occur not only via food but also from spray in homes, gardens, public parks and playgrounds.

During the last decades, endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) have emerged as a key challenge for European environment and health policies. Recent scientific evidence shows that action is urgently needed to reduce EDCs contamination of humans and the environment.

Scientific studies point out the role of perinatal exposures to EDCs, which can trigger various diseases like cancer, ADHD or diabetes, even later in life.The European Union is now about to adopt its Strategy on EDCs and related criteria, which will serve as a basis for protecting children from EDCs adverse effects.

Although there are a number of environmental regulations that include procedures for addressing EDCs (such as REACH), and the EU Commission has promised to bring out a revised EDCs strategy, many policy makers are not aware of their threat to public health and the environment.

Taking the opportunity of launching its ChildProtect Life+ project, WECF and PAN Europe invite you to debate about EDC related policies with senior European scientists, representatives from the Commission, the European Parliament as well as NGOs and multiplier on February 19, at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Idaliestraat 35, Brussels from 10.30 am to 3pm.

To open the event WECF plans to show the trailer for the documentary film ‘Unacceptable Levels’ by American Director Ed Brown.
