WECF and UNDP Serbia organising a beacon conference on Integrating Chemicals Safety in Belgrade, 11.April 2013

A high level conference "Chemical and product safety in the Western Balkans – a priority area for the post 2015 agenda”

04.04.2013 |WECF

As last month’s toxic-‐milk scare in Europe has shown, products on the market in the Western Balkans could contain hazardous substances. Governments have taken a number of measures, however, still many problems remain. WECF and UNDP Serbia now tackle the problem with a large-scale beacon event on chemical safety.

The conference “Chemical and product safety in the Western Balkans” taking place in Belgrade, Serbia on 11 of April, will address shared lessons learned from a 2-year EU-funded project on the issue. Preliminary results of the national consultations on possible priorities for a post-2015 development agenda will be presented, and recommendations formulated. Participants will be experts from national authorities, policy makers from the Western Balkans, EU and international level, science, social responsible entrepreneurs, trade unions and civil society from Serbia, FYR of Macedonia and Albania as well as a number of EU member states. The conference will provide an exhibition space for interested companies and organisations, where they will be able present products, inventories, tool kits, training materials and publications.

The conference will be opened by Mrs. Leposava Sojic, Assistant Minister of Energy Development and Environmental protection of Serbia, together with Borka Jeremic, representing the United Nations Country Team in Serbia and Sascha Gabizon, executive director of WECF international.

Other speakers include Petteri Mäkelä of the European Chemicals Agency ECHA of Finland and representatives of the Ministry of Environment of the FYR of Macedonia and the Public Health Agency of Albania. 100 participants from Serbia, Western Balkans, EU and international level have registered, already marking the conference a beacon event in chemical safety in the Balkans.

The conference is organised by WECF International, UNDP Serbia and non-governmental partners from the Western Balkans, with support of the European Union and the Ministries of Environment and Health of Serbia.
