They do not know how to survive as rice prices have increased 3-fold the last months. In Kyrgyzstan the terrible escalation of violence earlier this year was partly caused by social unrest about the 6-fold increase of energy prices, whereas many poor families already spent up to 30% of their available income on energy. Increasingly funds are becoming available to help countries mitigate and adapt to climate change. But these funds are not arriving in the poor communities, they are not accessible for widows and women-lead households.
The Coalition for Climate Justice is working hard to change this. We help poor women and men getting access to "free" renewable energy, access to bicycles. We help poor women and men with methods to harvest and conserve water and use climate resilient farming methods such as permaculture. We build capacity of local craftswomen and men to run small enterprises providing water and energy services, such as leasing of solar light as an alternative to kerosene lamps. We take part in the climate negotiations and propose changes to the criteria for climate funding, to make sure they become accessible for the most vulnerable groups, in particular women, indigenous peoples and urban poor.
