The International Conference "Transboundary Dniester River Basin Management and the EU Water Framework Directive" took place from 30th September to 1st October 2009 in Odessa, Ukraine, in the frame of the project ‘Democratisation of the Dniester River Basin Governance’, organized by Black Sea Women Club, in partnership with WECF and financially supported inter alia by the MATRA Program of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
About 127 participants, including, project participants, members of Parliament, Government of Ukraine, academies of sciences of Moldova and Ukraine, representatives of Water state Committee, environmental and water management department specialists, NGOs, scientists and students participated in the conference. Representatives from 7 countries were present.
The Dniester Conference was opened by vice chair of the river Diester basin Council. Presentations and workshops were held in order to increase the interest in the Integrated River Basin Management (IRBM) of the Dniester River and to unite NGOs efforts in lobbying the introduction of IRBM concept in the national and international transboundary legislation. WECF coordinators Gero Fedtke and Sabine Brueckmann introduced the MATRA project in their opening speech. WECF nature oriented Fish experts Mr and Mrs Holler from Austria organized a workshop for local fishers from the Kuchurgan tributary and other interested participants, facilitating a solution for their conflicts with farmers and local authorities.
As part of the conference, a round table was organized on environmental issues of the Kuchurgan reservoir. The round table was attended by Transdniestrian stakeholders (project partner Ecospectrum), local partner NGOs, state bodies and government) as well as the Ukrainian parties (BSWC, local NGO’s and community members, state bodies, scientists and government. A solution for the trans-boundary problems caused by the Moldavian Hydro-Electric Power station was sought by bringing all stakeholders together for dialogue.
The resolution of the conference recognized the current socio-environmental problems in the Dniester Basin and proposed solutions. It was submitted to the river Diester basin Council and to the governments of Moldova, Ukraine and to the government of not recognized Transdniestria.
