Safe water and sanitation for all in Moldova
Mobilizing citizens and authorities from Moldova to respect and realize the right to access to safe water and sanitation for all

The main activities aim to raise the awareness of rural citizens of Moldova of their fundamental right for clean water and sustainable sanitation by mobilizing the local communities and to build the capacities of the Moldavian communities in developing strategies for safe water and sustainable sanitation management. The project will empower children and citizens to address their right to safe water and sanitation through their own action, initiative and participation. A special focus will be given to promoting good practices in water management (cleaning actions in river basins, water springs and water wells, trainings on sustainable management of the water resources). By developing water and sanitation safety plans pupils, citizens and authorities will become aware of their rights, duties and capacities for restoring and protecting the environment and water sources. The project will provide tools for effective advocacy work and media communications on local, regional, national and international level (trainings, events, conferences, newsletters, video reports, press work)
Project main activities:
- Training of local NGOs, committees and interested citizens on the right to safe water and sanitation, and on developing Water and Sanitation Safety Plans.
- Raising awareness among the Moldavian citizens, in particular the youth, and authorities on the human right to have access to safe water and sanitation.
- Developing a strategy document on the right to safe water and sanitation
- Community and youth mobilization and elaboration of WSSP and National Action Plans
- Monitoring water quality from wells and springs, as well biological monitoring of rivers
- Implementation of the strategies of water resource protection measures
- Sharing experiences and results with the Moldavian communities, media and TV
- Advocating project results towards local, regional, national and international level
- Developing better policies for the protection of water resources at all levels -local and national.
- Constructing the first ecosan toilet in the Northern Moldova.
Stakeholders / actors / citizens / users (directly and indirectly) related to or affected by the project:
- 1500 Pupils and staff of 10 Moldavian schools will be involved in developing local Water and Sanitation Safety Plans, and learn about water quality and water protection, and their rights to have access to safe water and sanitation, as well as their responsibilities on the natural resources.
- 30 voluntary “water ambassadors” (15 per partner organization) will be trained on sustainable water and sanitation
- 30.000 Citizens of at least 10 target villages will be informed on the developments of the WSSPs and the implementation of action plans in order to improve the water quality in their region. The citizens will learn about the right to have access to safe water and sanitation
- Local authorities of at least 10 target villages will cooperate with the schools, NGOs and the citizens on developing WSSPs, setting targets on water protection measures.
Project results will be shared with National authorities, Ministries of Environment and Forestry, Agriculture and Health, International authorities, Parties of the Protocol on Water and Health, WHO-Euro Region, UNECE- und UNDP-Euro region.
