25.06.2011 | WICF Project

Countries: Worldwide
Donors: German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), GIZ’s programme “Promoting Gender Equality and Women’s Rights“
Partners: Women's Major Group, UNEP and the Network of Women Ministers and Leaders for the Environment
Issues: Gender & Rights
Duration: 01/2012 - 12/2012

During the Rio+20 Summit on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, women’s contribution to the sustainable development was highlighted by the Women's Rio+20 Good Practice Award ceremony that took place on 21st June. 16 women, along with the organizations that they represent, from 13 different countries were awarded the prize for their admirable work in local communities.

Women play an essential role in the process of sustainable development. Worldwide women are contributing to society’s wellbeing, prosperity, economy  and development. However they often do not have a voice in decision making process. This award appreciates the linkages between gender and sustainability and emphasizes that women should not be put aside by policy makers.

150 applications for the Women’s Rio+20 Good Practice Award were submitted – as WECF Executive Director Sascha Gabizon admitted “It was very difficult to choose as all were excellent” – finally 16 projects were awarded in five categories: Food Sovereignty, Climate Adaptation, Decent Jobs and Health, Water and Sanitation and Sustainable Energy. Eleven of the projects’ representatives received award during the ceremony from the women ministers of the Network of Women Ministers and Leaders for the Environment. First place winners received a medal, a certificate, a gift and a check for $1,000 (USD) in honor of their achievement.

The idea of the Women’s Rio+20 Good Practice Award came up at the annual meeting of the Network of Women Ministers and Leaders for the Environment held at UNEP in Nairobi, in February 2012. All participants of the meeting agreed that during the Rio+20 Summit on Sustainable Development the work of women for sustainable development should be acknowledge through an award program.

The award ceremony was organized by WECF with the Women’s Major Group core partners, UNEP and the Network of Women Ministers and Leaders for the Environment. The award was funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and supported through GIZ’s programme “Promoting Gender Equality and Women’s Rights“.
