Community mobilization for eco sanitation by Ecos NGO, Azerbaijan.

Ecos NGO from Baku, Azerbaijan, has started to implement its ELA project successfully. Nine communities in Southern Azerbaijan have already been visited and the first trainings on ecological sanitation have taken place. Initially it was planned to work with five communities, but due to high interest of the neighboring communities, four more communities are now participating.

A community training kit has been developed to mobilize and train the communities. Seven volunteers are trained and will go into the communities to mobilize the people and train them on sanitation issues. At the end of the year, the communities will develop their own project proposals on sanitation. The most active and prospective communities will be selected and Ecos NGO will base on those proposals their ELA proposal to WECF. Ecos NGO is ‘just’ the facilitator who activates the communities and makes knowledge and resources accessible. Especially interest for school toilets is very high. But the final outcomes of next year’s projects will depend on the priorities of the communities.

Aytan is working in the AmC Caspian Environmental Laboratory, where she can test the drinking water from her communities without problems, and provide this service to other NGO’s. Her boss is very supportive in her work for the NGO and allows her to visit often the target communities and work on the development of materials. Previously she has worked for CHF in environmental education and community mobilization.
