Uganda: Better Lives- Less Rural Migration

The aim of this project is to improve the living conditions of the rural, young population through a more sustainable agriculture, based on organic and conservation agriculture methods.

27.10.2017

Countries: Uganda
Donors: Bavarian State Chancellory (Germany)
Partners: Appropriate Technologies Uganda (ATU)
Issues: Agriculture
Duration: 01/2017 - 12/2018

With an annual population rate of 3.3%, Uganda has one of the highest population growth in the world. In 2017 the estimated population was 41.6 million people. About 85% of the population live in rural areas.

On average rural households generate nearly three quarters of their income from agriculture. Small farmers dominate the agricultural sector, over 90% of the products are produced on farms with an area of less than two hectares. Often the knowledge of small farmers is lacking on sustainable and profitable cultivation and livestock farming as well as marketing of the products. The soil degrades and the consequences of climate change are noticeable, which means that young people tend to leave the villages. About 20% of the population live below the poverty level. Loans to start small businesses are hardly  accessible for the rural population.

Target groups of the project

Rural population (women and men), especially smallholders and young people in Masindi

Goal of the project

The aim of this project is to improve the living conditions of the rural population through a more sustainable agriculture, based on methods of organic and conservation agriculture (CA), along the following principles: conservation of soil, permanent soil cover (by intercropping or mulching) and avoid the use of pesticides and chemicals. The manual for applying these principles is available here.

In addition, agricultural products will be better marketed by means of educational measures for profitability and access to local loans. Farm animal husbandry, such as chicken breeding, will also be encouraged.

The main measures are:

•   Know How transfer to sustainable and profitable agricultural methods (organic farming and conservation agriculture), as well as healthy and economical livestock farming, with on-site training measures and demonstration fields

•   Identification of potentially profitable, marketable products

•   Improvement of the financial foundations of agricultural production as well as of marketing enterprises, development of sustainable microcredit sources

Within the framework of this project the activities are to be carried out in a new region where poverty is particularly high: Masindi district in the North-West of Uganda.

The partner in Uganda is Appropriate Technologies Uganda (AT Uganda) Ltd. was founded in 2001 and offers a wide range of agricultural consultancy and company training in North and East Uganda. AT Uganda has extensive experience in technology development, agriculture and the development of marketing concepts. Since 2012, WECF and AT Uganda have been  cooperating succesfully.
