Women's Major Group wants to achieve gender equitable in Post2015 agreement

The United Nations General Assembly adopted on the 10 September 2014, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) outcome document as the main basis for integrating sustainable development goals into the post-2015 development agenda.
The next 12 months the overall “package” of the new global Sustainable Development Agenda will be finalized
The Secretary General’s “synthesis report” includes proposals for what to do with the SDG goals and targets, as well as how to create accountability and monitoring mechanisms, pre-able and a financial and MOI package. Intergovernmental negotiations are expected to start in January or February 2015 to conclude the agreements on these remaining open parts of the agenda. An important milestone will also be the 3rd Financing for Development summit taking place in Addis Ababa in July 2015, in which financial proposals which will also cover the new development agenda will be negotiated.
WECF and Women’s major group
The civil society in the UNCSD process has been organised – since Rio 1992 – in 9 major groups, including the major group “Women”. The women’s major group (WMG) grew strongly since the Rio+20 summit, amongst other thanks to support from BMZ and GIZ, and now comprises over 600 organizations with their networks covering 150 countries. WECF – Women in Europe has been nominated and re-elected in September 2014, to continue for another 2 year period as one of the global coordinators (“organising partners”) of the Women’s Major Group.
Objectives: achieving a gender equitable Post 2015 agreement
WECF coordinates many local policy implementation projects with women’s organisations, to demonstrate that policies can be implemented whilst ensuring a positive gender equitable impact. WECF and its local partners in Georgia are working with the National Government on the world-wide first “gender sensitive national climate mitigation plan” (NAMA).
Aim of this project is to ensure that the new Post-2015 sustainable development agenda to be agreed in September 2015 contains strong women’s rights language in the pre-amble and specific gender-equitable instruments for monitoring, evaluation, financing and other means of implementation.
WECF contribution to WMG
- Ensure that key lessons learned by women’s organisations from both best and worse gender impacts of financing, MOI, monitoring and evaluation mechanisms other policy frameworks are documented.
- Facilitate the sharing of these lessons by women’s organisations with key negotiators of the Post2015 agenda
- Strengthen cooperation between women’s organisations with other strategic partners for joint advocacy on gender-equitable mechanisms for monitoring, evaluation, financing and other means of implementation.
- Increase outreach activities on the need for strong gender instruments to implement the Post 2015 agenda
WECF's outcomes aimed at
- Key negotiators from member states and UN agencies as well as other CSOs on Post2015/SDGs will have been invited to and participated in the side-event co-organised by WECF and the WMGs.
- Different Member states negotiators receive coordinated input for language, building on the best available language from different processes and inconsistencies are made transparent.
- At least 3 proposals by the Women’s Major Group, are being seriously considered for inclusion in the proposals for goals by end of project period.
